I don't think that would be a good idea. You can tape it, but still, if you injured it even more, that might be a bigger problem then it was before.
Take a rest, and just wait til it's fully heal.
If you injure it more, then who knows how long it will take to heal.
sorry for the injury, :(

I wouldn't..... I sprained/ jammed my thumb in the begginning of spring season and my coach said just tape it up. Whenever I play, I still have to tape it because it still clicks, grinds, and basically still hurts... I am a sette r and libero and trust me. Setting is not fun now :(

You can TAPE it and continue playing. Professional fighters do that all the time. It will still heal and try to "baby" it as much as you can. But the thumb will have a lot of time to heal before and after the game. You can always soak it in epson salts afterwards too. It really won't hurt anything to play with a sprained thumb other than the pain.

I do not think it will be safe to play because you could just hurt it worse if you block or even set it. Sorry but it might not be safe because you can really hurt it. But if you do play then yes you will have to tape it. I am not sure if you will be able to anything but pass a ball because it could really hurt your thumb if you do anything else.

OMG NO WAY! i SPRAINED MY THUMB YESTERDAY!! Its severly sprained and will take 6 weeks to heal :(
Its not safe to play as far s blocking and spiking I'm sorry :( I tried playing on it today and I hyper extended it. I can't write or even hold a fork to eat my food because its my dominate hand. You might be able to slowly begin playing another 2 weeks in, but right now you need to tape it, ice it, pain killers, elevate and take it slow. However there are some things you can do. I can still pass and overhand serve. You can probably sub in for serves and play backrow but some refs won't let you play with a tape. Defiently contiue going to practices and games to support your team, if you take proper care it could be back to normal in a week or so depending on the severity of the sprain
